The author uses this headline but then goes on to describe how very, very close Trump is to being a fascist. Indeed, he pretty much makes the case. The fact that US institutions held fast under Trump is only a mark of how strong they were, not an indication of Trump’s designs.
He was well on his way to dismantling institutions and purging anyone who would not swear personal loyalty to him (& therefore, not to the law, the Constitution or the US populace). Jim Comey and Andrew McCabe are but two examples. I am not clear what the overall thrust of this article is … we are not to learn from history? (But then history is extensively cited.) If one cares about democracy, the rule of law, truth, justice, human life and even the current trajectory of the climate emergency, it would behoove one to be on high alert around any leader who comes as close to fascist as Trump does. Indeed, Noam Chomsky has called Trump “worse than Hitler,” became he is happy to watch our beautiful planet 🌎 burn 🔥 with all of us on it … as long as he “wins.”
The author seems cooly detached from the reality of our situation, including hundreds of thousands dead due to ineptitude, lack of overall caring & fascist egocentrism around the pandemic.
As a Jew, I am surprised that for Mr. Weisser, the many racist dog whistles, the white supremacist symbology & cultivation of actual Nazi support by Trump & his Cabal do not carry the deeply ominous ring they generally should for those who would be (and have been) the first victims of fascist cruelty. And that he would not advocate vigorously for ALL action on the part of the population to ensure Trump & the GQP do not come back into power in any way, shape or form. I thought we were to “learn” from the Holocaust. … Most unfortunate.
For those who wish to engage, I have published several essays at my Medium account which include both suggested actions, and resources — around protecting democracy and around the climate crisis.
We get both the democracy and the planet we deserve.
